I recently sat down with a new client. Midway through our conversation, she disclosed a secret—one she had never told a therapist before.
This secret was something she had been carrying around as emotional weight for over 30 years. It wasn’t just the secret itself she had been holding on to; it was the shame and anger she felt about it, the guilt she harbored over it, and the judgment she passed on herself because of it.
Her way of dealing with these unresolved feelings was to eat. The eating lead to weight gain. She kept eating and kept gaining weight because part of her mind believed she deserved to be punished.
Food was both her friend and her enemy, her comfort and her chosen consequence for her past “bad” behavior.
In her session, we used an alternative energy-clearing tool. She cried as she released waves of emotions that had accumulated over all these years. She sighed a breath of relief. Her shoulders relaxed as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
This was the first step: speaking the truth, acknowledging the pain, and offering herself compassion despite what had happened in the past.
We just scraped the surface of the layers of the pain. But it was a start. She had begun the forgiveness and healing process pivotal to her well-being.
What do you need to do to start forgiving yourself and begin your healing process to develop a better relationship with food, your body and yourself?
What are the emotions and pains of the past you are carrying around that are contributing to your emotional weight?
Once you begin to release the emotional weight, the physical weight often follows. I see the pattern happen again and again. Shed the emotional weight, and watch the physical weight follow.
Ultimately, this journey isn’t about weight.
It’s about learning how to truly love and care for yourself and your body. It’s about realizing you’re worthy and deserving, no matter what you’ve done in the past.
It’s about knowing that you are enough, just as you are.
